This film follows the trajectory of singer Ma Rainey (played by the magnificent Viola Davis), called “Mother of the blues”, during the recording session of an album. During this process, she lives clashes with her overly ambitious trumpeter and her white management that seeks to control her at all costs. Facts are revealed and shock everyone’s life. 3. What’s Left Behind (2020)
A film that mixes horror and history, a combination that worked very well. In the plot, a refugee couple seeks to leave South Sudan that has been taken over by war and ravaged violently. The two struggle to be accepted and adapt in an English city. The problem is that they were installed in a house where a great evil exists, something that will mark the characters’ lives forever.
4. The Irish (2019)
Frank Sheeran has participated in several wars, but now makes his living as a truck driver and mob’s number one hit man. The mystery revolves around an event: the most famous former president of a trade union association disappears out of nowhere, and Frank becomes the main suspect. Irish is almost three hours long, but if you like crime movies, you won’t even see the time go by. Without a doubt, this is one of the best movies on Netflix.
5. Raw Gems (2019)
Jeweler Howard Ratner, played by Adam Sandler, is in deep debt. To get rid of them and the thugs that threaten him daily, he grabs a big chance: an exotic stone, uncut, full of precious minerals, from Ethiopia. He starts selling it to clients, including Kevin Garnett, the NBA, but realizes that at auction he can make a lot more profit. Many confusions and changes occur in the jeweler’s life, situations that hold you back from the beginning to the end of the film.
6. History of a Wedding (2019)
Nicole and her husband, Charlie, want to get a divorce amicably so their son won’t be traumatized. They then decide to continue living in the same house. In the long run, the decision is not so right and forced coexistence can bring serious emotional consequences. A delicate and intense film, perfect for those who like the drama genre.
7. My name is Dolemite (2019)
This movie is a comedy based on the life of Rudy Ray Moore, played by Eddie Murphy. Initially, the man sold records in a small store and was a comedian. The matter of his comedies was in the stories heard in the streets, without leaving aside swear words and vulgar themes. He is so successful among American blacks that, in addition to shining in concert halls, he decides to make a film, in which his alter ego Dolemite is a pimp who lives fighting in the streets. The film shows the difficulties he encountered in not only being able to make an independent film but also circulating it in theaters.
8. Rome (2018)
Roma is a film in the drama genre that leads us to reflections. It features a middle-class Mexican family that has a very stable life, thanks to a maid, who not only is a maid, but also ends up babysitting the children of the house. However, this stability is affected when events disturb the family union that until then seemed perfect. Therefore, changes occur with the characters, internally and collectively. Without a doubt, one of the best movies on Netflix, besides being a production of the platform itself!
9. Lady Bird (2017)
Another dramatic film, but with an air of comedy. In it, a girl named Christine is finishing high school and what she wants most is to go to college far from her mother’s house in Sacramento. The mother rejects the idea of her daughter studying abroad, while the girl, with a strong and determined personality, does not give up on her goal. It’s a beautiful film about discoveries, transition to adulthood and romantic relationships.
10. Okja (2017)
This South Korean film tells the story of Mija, a girl who spent a decade with a super pig, who was seen as her great friend. The problem is that this animal was a new Chilean species, cared for in laboratories, by a powerful company managed by Lucy Mirando, played by Tida Swinton. The businesswoman had plans with the animals, raising them as pets was not a priority…
11. Moonlight: under moonlight (2016)
Chrion is a young black man who lives in Miami, in a very poor community. This film tells his story starting from three phases of life: childhood, full of problems, including bullying; adolescence, quite troubled due to identity problems; and adulthood, in the midst of crime and drugs. Contrary to popular belief, the film is very poetic and beautiful, in addition to leading us to many reflections on life.
12. The 13th Amendment (2016)
A documentary could not be missing from this list. As the title makes clear, it discusses the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. Researchers, activists and politicians analyze the consequences of this, making a correlation between the boom in the prison system and the criminalization of the black population. A much needed theme!
13. Carol (2015)
A film about motherhood, divorce and relationships between women. Elegant Carol meets Therese at a department store, where she is looking for a Christmas present for her daughter. Carol is unhappy, separating from her husband and getting closer and closer to Therese, with whom she lives beautiful and happy moments, which unfortunately do not last forever. The fantastic and beautiful Ramona moves the heart of Scott Pilgri, a young boy who had a band in high school, a steady relationship and lived through several jobs. 15. It’s raining hamburger (2009)
A very fun drawing, which even has a continuation. Scientist Flint Lockwood always dreamed of creating something great that could make a difference in people’s lives.
