It’s the big event of the new school year on the other side of the Atlantic. Like every year, the Emmy Awards ceremony rewards the best (but not always) in television. It’s a bit special this year because everything was virtual. As the Covid-19 pandemic is still in the news (to date, 200,000 people have died in the United States), it was quite natural that the organisers decided to hold the ceremony remotely.

The nominees and winners virtually watched the Oscars on TV from their living rooms, hotel rooms or wherever they chose.

Instead of the gigantic Microsoft Theatre in the heart of Los Angeles, it is in complete privacy that the series Watchmen, Schitt’s Creek and Estate celebrated their victories.

The Emmy Awards 2020, between entertainment and politics

From Toronto, Canada’s National Series Team Schitt’s Creek attended his coronation. The winner of the evening, the series achieved a real feat by winning all the awards in the seven categories in which it was nominated. The four actors nominated for Best Actor/.rice and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy were presented with the statuette.

With 26 nominations, the HBO mini-series Watchmen (masked vigilantes in a chaotic and tense world) leaves with four awards including Best Actress for Oscar-winning Regina King and Best Supporting Actor. This mini-series is reminiscent of today’s tensions in the United States between police violence and racism. « You have to vote. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this, as a member of a show as visionary as Watchmen… “, the actress sliced the actress in her speech. The actress was also wearing a t-shirt with the effigy of Breonna Taylor, who was murdered in her home by the police.

Third series to win the bet: Estate. Featuring the story of a wealthy family struggling to take control of an influential media outlet, Succession wins the title of Best Drama Series and Best Actor. A godsend for HBO, which dominated the evening’s awards and was looking for a worthy successor to the mountain. Game of Thrones since last year.

While these three series left little room for their competitors (The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs. America, Euphoria or Ozark), their committed message still left some room for the evening’s offbeat lozenges. From a mini-meeting of part of the cast of Friends (Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston) to a sketch between Jimmy Kimmel and Jennifer Aniston, the Emmy Awards attempted to present an entertaining show despite the sanitary conditions.

As for the surprise side, it is from the young and precocious Zendaya that it comes to us. Auréolée for her role in EuphoriaA popular series about the adventures of teenagers in search of their identity, the former Disney actress became the youngest recipient of this award in the Best Actress in a Dramatic Series category at the age of 24. « I know this is a really, really weird time to be celebrating, but I just want to say that there’s hope for young people…admitting, by the way, I know the show’s not always a good example of that, but there’s hope for young people… ».
